The So-called Democracy
in Iraq
Over the last six years,
there has been an ongoing heated debate concerning the controversial issue of
whether Saddam Hussein's execution brought democracy to Iraq or not. It is an
undeniable fact that Hussein was the fifth president of Republic of Iraq and he
controlled the country with absolute and unlimited power over the twenty-four
year period. Furthermore, Saddam Hussein was the component of threat for
America and his neighbours; therefore, in 2003, American troops entered the
Republic of Iraq and Hussein was deposed so as to establish democracy. After he
was arrested, he was sentenced to death and executed within few days in 2006. In
spite of Saddam Hussein's execution, Iraq is not a democratic country due to
not being an independent country, ruling by Islamic law and all citizens not
being equal before the law.
Independence
is the most significant features of democracy. To begin with, not only does a
sovereign country have its own constitution, flag and monetary unit, but it
must also be independent in the internal and external affairs. To go into
further detail, during Saddam Hussein's regime, Iraq controlled by dictatorship
yet it was an independent country. Nonetheless, Saddam Hussein's regime was the
component of threat for America and his neighbours such as; Iran, Syria, Kuwait
and so on. Furthermore, Iraq played a vital role in US's The Greater Middle
East Project yet America had to provide a valid reason in order to attack Iraq.
The dictatorship of Saddam Hussein was a good evidence for imperialist
countries like US and UK, and regime of Iraq was changed from despotism to
democracy. However, several treaties were signed between America and Iraq and
so America is able to intervene in the internal and external affairs of Iraqi
government. As a result, it cannot be said that Republic of Iraq is independent
country.
Secondly, Iraq is the
one of the Islamic countries in the middle east and it is governed by Islamic
laws like Iran and Saudi Arabia. The primary sources of Sharia are Quran and
the Prophet Muhammad's sayings and deeds; moreover, the Islamic laws are so
strict and it is never changed under any circumstance. This is because the
Islamic laws occurred approximately 1200 ago and it has directly affected Iraqi
people's every aspect of lives for centuries. Nevertheless, America seemed to
change a thousand year old Iraqi traditions and customs within a few years but
it failed.
In addition to being not
an independent country and ruling by Islamic law, all citizens should be equal
before the law in an independence country yet it is not possible to say the
people living in Iraq. First of all, women have subordinated to men and Iraqi
women have never defended their rights because according to the law of Iraq,
witnesses of two women equal to a man. Secondly, according to Islamic law
adultery is the one of the most crucial offence and penalty of adultery is
death in Islamic law yet for only women. Moreover, it cannot be mentioned about
freedom of expression in Iraq as all of the people must accept and obey the
rules without questioning.
All in all, if the
information which has been offered above is taken into consideration, it can be
safely assumed that neither before nor after Saddam Husain's execution, Iraq
has never been a democratic country because of not being an independent
country, ruling by Islamic law and all citizens not being equal before the law.
What I strongly believe is that not only did American soldiers not establish
democracy in Iraq, but also brought violence, death and poverty.
